Plain-language summary
PalmDrop does not require an account and does not upload your files, camera images, or palm data to servers operated by the developer. Files and temporary handoff information move directly between nearby devices on your local network or through supported nearby-device connections.
1. Scope
This Privacy Policy applies to the PalmDrop mobile and desktop application (the “App”), provided by the PalmDrop developer (“we,” “us,” or “our”). By using the App, you acknowledge the practices described here.
2. Information the App processes
- Files and file information. The App processes files you select or make available for transfer, including file names, types, sizes, folder structure, and file contents. This is necessary to send the files to the nearby device you choose.
- Nearby-device and network information. To discover and connect to another PalmDrop device, the App processes and may broadcast on your local network a randomly generated device ID, device name, platform type, local network address and port, Bluetooth identifiers, and a public transfer key. Nearby devices running PalmDrop may receive this information.
- Camera images and palm-derived data. When gesture or palm-recognition features are enabled, the App uses your camera to detect a hand and create a mathematical palm descriptor from hand geometry and texture. Camera frames are processed locally and are not uploaded to us. A temporary derived palm descriptor may be sent directly to a nearby PalmDrop device for matching during a handoff. It is held in memory only for the active handoff and is not saved as a camera photo or permanent biometric profile by the App.
- Local app data. The App stores a random device ID, private transfer key, settings, selected receive location, and data needed to display or complete transfers on your device. The private key remains on your device.
3. Permissions and why they are used
- Camera: to recognize the hand or palm gesture used to initiate a transfer. Camera access is not used for advertising or analytics.
- Nearby devices and Bluetooth: to find nearby PalmDrop devices and establish a connection.
- Local network and Wi-Fi: to discover devices and transfer files directly between them.
- Photos, media, files, or storage: to let you choose content to send and save content you accept. Access depends on your device and operating-system version.
- Notifications or background operation, where requested: to show transfer status and keep an active transfer or gesture window working when the App is not in the foreground.
4. How information is used
Information is processed only to:
- discover and identify nearby PalmDrop devices;
- match an optional palm gesture for a requested handoff;
- send, receive, verify, resume, and display file transfers;
- remember local settings and protect the device transfer identity;
- maintain the App’s security, reliability, and core functionality.
We do not sell personal information, use it for targeted advertising, or use third-party advertising or analytics SDKs in the App.
5. Sharing and disclosure
Your files and handoff information are shared only with the nearby device involved in the transfer. Because nearby discovery uses local network or Bluetooth broadcasts, another device within range may be able to observe discovery information such as your device name and random device ID. A file is not transferred until the App’s handoff and acceptance flow authorizes it.
We do not receive your App data on developer-operated servers. We may disclose information only if required by law; in the normal operation of the App, we do not possess your files or in-App camera data to disclose.
6. Storage, retention, and deletion
Selected files remain in their original locations, and received files remain in the destination you choose until you delete them. The App’s random device ID, private transfer key, and settings remain locally on your device until you clear the App’s data or uninstall it. Temporary camera frames and palm descriptors are discarded after processing or when the active handoff expires.
PalmDrop has no user account and no developer-hosted account database. You can delete local App data through your device settings, uninstall the App, and delete transferred files using your device’s file manager.
7. Your choices
You may disable gesture or palm recognition in the App, decline an incoming transfer, choose which files to send, and revoke camera, nearby-device, notification, or storage permissions in your operating system settings. Revoking a permission may prevent the related feature from working.
8. Security
PalmDrop limits transfers to nearby connections and keeps the private transfer identity on your device. No method of electronic transfer or storage is completely secure, so you should transfer files only to a device you recognize and trust.
9. Children’s privacy
PalmDrop is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect children’s personal information on developer-operated servers. If you believe a child has provided information to us, contact us using the details below.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when PalmDrop’s features or legal obligations change. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated when a revised policy is published.
